I had used mindfulness as a sportswoman all my life without really recognising it or the processes I was using.
In 2019 I suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after a traumatic event. This affected every aspect of my daily life. I started to look at ways in which I could identify and reduce the triggers that reduced my ability to function from day to day.
I learned how to become mindful, and developing meditation techniques helped me to free myself from the PTSD.
I still practice my routines daily and noticed the positive changes both to my mind and body.
As a scientist I started looking at the research of how of mindfulness & meditation worked.
The neurological mechanisms that enabled our brains plasticity to rewire themselves and the physiological ones that are affected enabling those transformations to help with real change.
I have mentioned a few of those changes below as well as a brief outline of the differences between mindfulness & meditation.
Being mindful is about maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and surrounding environment.
It really does bring our thoughts into what we are sensing now rather than replaying the past or imagining the future.
Meditation is a precise conscious changing set of techniques that are intended to encourage a heightened state of awareness and focused attention.
These techniques allow us to rest our mind and attain a state of consciousness that is totally different from our normal waking state.
